ERCP

ERCP is Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

ERCP is done to examine the duodenum (proximal small intestine) , papilla (Common opening for the bile duct and the pancreatic duct) also to treat disorders of the bile duct and the pancreatic duct. 

​

The test is done under anaesthesia by gastroenterologists. A flexible tube which has a camera and a light at the tip is passed into the duodenum. Using various instruments, through the papilla either the pancreatic duct or the bile duct is entered. Bile duct stones or the pancreatic duct stones are removed and a stent will be placed if necessary. The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour. When performed by an expert gastroenterologist, the procedure has minimal side effects and very good success rate.

Before the procedure the gastroenterologist will explain the risks and benefits of the procedure. Accordingly, if need patient may be given some medications which can prevent them from side effects and complications. Special care will be given by the doctors before, during, and after the procedure. Usually after a few hours of observation, patient will be discharged with instructions to follow.

Why is ERCP done?

ERCP is done to find the cause of unexplained abdominal pain or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

 

Main indications of ERCP include bile duct blockage (bile duct stone or cancer) or pancreatic duct blockage (due to stones, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer)
